STUDENTS participating in the Seventh Borneo Global Issues Conference (BGIC) are finding the experience challenging yet entertaining as they not only get to mingle and exchange views with individuals from various countries but also get to enhance their public speaking techniques.

The conference, organised by International School Brunei (ISB), was launched on February 28 and saw local as well as international schools debate on topics concerning the environment, political issues as well as on the global economy.

Waree'ah Hj Mohd Jaafar from Raja Isteri Girls' High School (STPRI) said that it has been exciting for her. She plans to join the debate team in her school and said that the conference was good practice.Happy to have met all the Singaporean and Malaysian delegates, Waree'ah said that the debates get heated but "it's all done in the spirit of debating".

"I encourage more local students to join this forum as it will be beneficial for them in the future," she added.

Liyana Nadhirah Hj Yussof, a Form Five student from STPRI, said that the experience will help in her upcoming oral exams as interaction with other students will help develop her language oral skills. "It is so important to develop public speaking because if we can't speak, how are we going to express our views and opinions?" she said.

Kevin Siaw from Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College (Soas) also agreed that the debates were fun and tends to get heated. He said that it has helped him in terms of public speaking and enhancing his debating skills.

Ecstatic at meeting people from different walks of life, Kevin particularly took a liking to Nathan Chasing Horse, a Native American medicine man who was an invited speaker at the conference. He admires him because of his desire to change the world.

"He is quite brave to do it alone and I aspire to be brave like him and hope that I would be able to make a difference in the world," he said.Hannah Mclay from New Zealand believes that the debates are very engaging and is happy to meet new friends and share different views, particularly from those who come from various indigenous backgrounds.

"These debates have opened my mind to a lot of different views and it has taught me to not look at things so one-sidedly. It's also interesting to see what different people from different countries have to say regarding certain issues so you learn a lot from these debates.

"Thomas Srirphadra from Bangkok, Thailand, also agrees on the educational value of the debates. "These debates teach you how to structure your arguments and make you more confident as you cannot be afraid to voice your opinions if you want to prove a point. You gain a lot just by joining."

11pm lastnight. we dcided to .. talk on the phone. so yea, i slept at 8-9something. then woke up at 11pm.
then, i went online. he wasnt there at first. i thought he didnt show up. oh. i was wrong. umm. After that, he texted me. so, i thought, 'inda jadi kali call'. =] i wanted to ask that, but, idk how. stupidME. cs i decided to sleep.

Pfft, its 2am now, I checked the phone, he tried two times to call, 11.48pm & 12.09am.

i wish i could hear his voice. have no mood, that i dont wanna go to sch. tmr. god, its monday. i hate monday. =/
